One of Japan's Strongest Nylon Materials

2520D ballistic nylon spec

About Ballistic Nylon

CORDURA® ballistic nylon, produced by Invista in the US, is used in outdoor and other situations requiring high durability. Its exceptional strength, so much so that it is used in bulletproof vests, makes it one of the toughest fabrics available. Despite its military specifications, it is used in a wide range of general products.

Ballister nylon is a Japanese-made fabric created domestically with such robust military specifications. Furthermore, it is made even stronger by using 2520D thread, which is thicker than the ballistic nylon generally available on the market.

This fabric, boasting one of the strongest grades of strength among domestically produced materials, truly demonstrates its appeal when integrated into products such as bags, exceeding its catalog specifications. Let's explore the charm of this Ballister nylon.

The strength of the fabric is the strength of the thread.

The material used in WONDER BAGGAGE bags, Ballistic Nylon, is one of the strongest fabrics available in Japan.

The yarn used to make the fabric is "ultra-strong 66 nylon yarn" originally used for military purposes in the United States. As mentioned earlier, the denier count (hereafter D), which indicates the thickness (mass) of the yarn, is 2520D. To illustrate how impressive this number is, we have prepared a magnified comparison image of common 420 denier nylon. You can immediately see the overwhelming difference in the size of the yarn fibers.

The strength of the yarn used to make a fabric directly translates to the fabric's strength. Its appearance also directly impacts the product's look, creating a unique presence.

Typical nylon fabrics are around 210D for thin ones, 420D for standard ones, and 1000D for thick ones. A value of 2520D indicates a strength six times greater than standard nylon (420D).

What is known as ballistic nylon is approximately 1680-2100D, which is 4 to 5 times stronger than normal. The Ballister Nylon, which exceeds these values, is recognized as a material with extremely high strength not only in Japan but worldwide.

As an aside, the "XX times stronger than normal nylon" comparisons seen in media articles will vary in their multiplier depending on the denier count of the standard nylon fabric. In other words, even if it's "5 times stronger," it would be 1050D if based on a thin 210D, but 2100D if based on 420D.

Upon closer investigation, the fact that this "5 times stronger" value varies among manufacturers is likely due to the varying "normal standards" they use.

(*) Denier: 1D represents the mass in grams of 9000 meters of yarn.

Product Specifications

Ballistic nylon is made by a Japanese fabric manufacturer, and various comparative tests have been conducted by public institutions.

As you can see from the table, ballistic nylon is several times stronger than regular nylon material (420 nylon oxford). Its incredible toughness is such that it is even used in bulletproof vests. It also has excellent resistance to heat melting, a weakness of nylon, which is something that cannot be overlooked by bag brands.

In a test where a cigarette was pressed against the material at approximately 800 degrees, the material remained pierced for 30 seconds. These various specifications show that the material can be used safely even in the "unexpected" situations that you may encounter in various situations.

verification

The figures mentioned above are verified by public testing facilities. To truly understand its toughness, WONDER BAGGAGE conducted its own simple comparison with 420D nylon.

Tensile strength test video

Verification Method: Fabric pieces cut to the same length are pulled by a machine.

  • Verification Results: 420D broke. Ballistic could not be measured due to insufficient strength of the measuring machine.
  • In past tests, accurate numerical data was not recorded, so this is imprecise information, but Ballistic nylon consistently pulled out of the fixture due to insufficient strength, no matter how many times it was measured.

Dissolution test video

Verification Method: Fabric swatches were exposed to a candle flame (approx. 1000-1500 degrees Celsius) and the time until a hole appeared was recorded.

  • Verification Result: The 420D fabric melted immediately and then ignited. The Ballistic fabric melted slowly and a hole appeared.
  • Although it melted faster than a cigarette, this was an extreme test, so that's to be expected. There was still some time until it melted, so even if it were placed near a heat source and melted, or if a cigarette touched it, it likely wouldn't be much of a problem.

Cut-resistant performance test video

Verification Method: Cut the fabric with a utility knife.

  • Verification Results: The 420D was cut. The Ballistic withstood multiple cuts.
  • Even though multiple cuts don't apply as much force as a single cut, this demonstrated the strength of the threads themselves. A male staff member was later able to cut through the same spot by tracing it repeatedly, but this required applying significant force, such as pressing down with his body weight onto a rubber mat, suggesting that it would not be cut under normal circumstances.

Royal Navy

The navy color of the ballistic nylon used by WONDER BAGGAGE is the brand's original Royal Navy. While regular inline navy has a strong green tint, this Royal Navy has a slight reddish hue, giving it a more formal and dignified impression.

Nylon that changes over time

Ballistic nylon is manufactured domestically. The high weave density and precision in the process of turning the yarn into fabric gives the material a crisp and firm quality, which allows bags made from it to stand upright well. Bags created with this refined technology and material thus achieve a luxurious appearance.

Furthermore, ballistic nylon is a material that, unusually for nylon, undergoes age-related changes; the more it is used, the softer it becomes and the more it conforms to the user.

Maintenance

To help you use your bag for as long as possible, we introduce care instructions for the nylon and leather parts of the main body.

Important Notes
We do not recommend washing your bag by hand or in a washing machine. Applying stress to the bag while it is wet can cause it to lose shape or be damaged.

Nylon

This applies to all nylon materials used in WONDER BAGGAGE bags. Generally, no daily maintenance is required. If it gets dirty, please try the following:

【What you need】 Cloth

Care Instructions
1. Gently wipe the dirty area with a firmly wrung damp cloth.
2. Dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

※Leaving it wet may accelerate the deterioration of the PU material on the back of the fabric.

Leather

Daily Care

【What you need】 Leather brush, cloth, cream

Care Instructions
1. Brush off dust from the surface.
2. Apply a small amount of cream to a soft cloth and quickly spread it thinly over the entire surface.
3. Dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

The key is to brush off dust first.

Cream

Too much cream can cause stains, so adjust the amount little by little.

Waterproof spray

Using a waterproof spray (outdoors) as a finish can help maintain its appearance even better.

If it gets wet

Care Instructions
1. To prevent color unevenness, immediately wipe the entire surface gently with a firmly wrung cloth.
2. Dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

If it gets dirty

【What you need】 Cloth, remover, cream

Care Instructions
1. Apply remover to a cloth and spread it over the entire surface to lift the dirt.
2. Apply a thin layer of cream to moisturize the leather.
3. Gently wipe with another cloth to remove excess cream.

Dirt remover

Leather Handle

If color changes are a concern

【What you need】 Cloth, colored leather cream, leather brush

Care Instructions
1. After removing dirt with a brush, apply cream with a cloth.
2. For fine details, using a brush helps the color penetrate better.
3. The process is complete when the entire surface is colored.

Handle

Before and After

Using an "emulsified cream" restores nourishment and a natural shine.

Other Parts

Zipper

If the zipper becomes stiff, spray a zipper lubricant directly onto it and let it dry thoroughly.

The handle leather showed significant signs of aging due to long-term use, so the handle was replaced. The lining had large holes on both ends.
This damage is presumed to be caused by the corners rubbing when files and other documents were put in and taken out.

This repair was carried out by completely replacing the lining. Due to the extensive nature of the work, the repair period was about one and a half months.

Damage or replacements due to aging from use are not covered by the free repair warranty, so the lining and handle replacements were handled at a cost.

Repair requests and consultations are accepted via the dedicated form.
